The restoration of the well of San Giacomo

The well is located in the center of the ancient cloister of the convent, surrounded by round arches, the important fulcrum of the architectural space of Corte de Chiostri, former Collegio di S. Giacomo di Vicenza, by Francesco Duodo of 1774, which has now become the civic library.
The conservative restoration project of the well, set up by Studio Gabbiani & Associati, follows an accurate survey, which confirms its visible bad state of conservation. The well curb has undergone phenomena of surface wear, fracturing, exfoliation and detachment of even considerable portions of material.
The intervention philosophy is conservative, both of the material aspects and of the connection of the well with its context. Considering the morphology of the stone material, its carbonate nature and the degradation due to atmospheric and biological agents, the conservative restoration phases sought to improve the mechanical characteristics and make the interpretation of the artefact clearer, altered by a strong biological attack.
